David Varton has a score to settle: his relatives were killed by a nuclear attack on Earth, prompting him to join the Space Corps to pilot a space interceptor. Fighting furiously from bases scattered across the solar system, the Space Corps tries to divert the continuous attacks by an alien race that cannot be communicated with, capturing enemy ships so that the secret of faster than light travel can be unraveled, and that scout ships could be sent out to identify the enemy system. But once the alien planet is located, it is found to possess characteristics that require an initial attack with a stealth airplane which Varton alone is small enough to fit in. Can the affection of his girlfriend help Varton resist High Command's efforts to make him accept a mission that could win the war?
