Don is dead. Roger knows this. It's the most obvious thing there is at that moment. It is obvious because Roger is at the funeral for Don and his body lies in the casket up front. He saw him there. It was Don. And he saw his ex-wives and daughter file past it. It's too much for Roger. He doesn't want to be there but he is the representative of the firm both he and Don work, that is, worked for. He was chosen much too much unfairly on the basis of some nebulous connection to him that came from a trip they had both taken for training. Roger had ended up with Don. They had spoken. That was it. Surely it wasn't enough for him to be saddled with going to the man's funeral? But he was there and it wouldn't last forever. This would be the end of it. There would be no further connection to Don from this point forward. Because Don was dead. But a beep on his cell phone makes him wonder about this. It's a message. And it's from Don. From the author of The Joining.
