Effect Of Plant Growth Regulators On Acacia Catechu Cuttings

Acacia catechu is found chiefly in Punjab, Garhwal and Kumaon, Bihar, Orissa and the Irrawady valley in Burma. This is the northern or Kumaon form. In the sub Himalayan tract and the outer Himalayas, it ascends up to 900-1200m elevation. Among different techniques propagation through cuttings is most common, simple and cheapest one. This method seems to be very useful for the multiplication of species and for producing clones. Clonal planting material is one of considerable importance in the practice of forestry, because it offers advantage of uniformity of growth and development by eliminating genetic differences between trees and by making immediate availability of superior individual for seed orchards and for plantations. Stem or shoot portions are generally very good materials for rooting purpose because they usually have undifferentiated tissues to permit easy differentiation of root primordial and also have buds already formed. For rooting in cuttings various classes of growth regulators such as Auxins, Cytokinins etc. can be used. However, of these Auxins are known to have greatest effect on root formation in the cutting.
