Group Identity and Communication Difficulties: a Study of Intergroup Communication Difficulties Between Passengers and Touts at the Kisumu City Bus Park
Ogone John Obiero
This book aims to inform both scholars and the public about the nature and extent of intergroup communication difficulties. In Kenya, as in other parts of the world, the transport industry is fast becoming essential to the increasing pace of life. But in the Kenyan situation,a unique and very influential culture is emerging since the industry brings together all manner of people with diverse interests, lifestyles, and specialities. With regard to communication among such people, the book traces instances of communicative difficulties within the framework of intergroup interaction between two foremost groups in public transport. Specifically, this book systematically investigates how the interplay of intergroup variables such as group identity, social stereotypes, and communicative distances may be the cause of communication breakdown, and how such breakdown may result in conflictual relationships between the groups involved.
