Orpheus Chamber Orchestra
The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra turns fifty - in anticipation of the anniversary in 2022, this 55-CD anthology by the ensemble from New York City is being released. "Orpheus", as it is called by members and enthusiasts, is unique in many ways: unconventional interpretations, outstanding programs and, last but not least, the collective democratic leadership by the orchestra members themselves characterize the ensemble. The discography on Deutsche Grammophon includes recordings with outstanding soloists such as Martha Argerich, Gidon Kremer, Mischa Maisky, Jan Lisiecki and Gil Shaham; Mendelssohn's Italian Symphony in a live recording is published for the first time in this box. Orpheus' collective leadership model was originally a child of the alternative culture of the 1960s. The often vaunted sound culture, especially of the string section, is probably a result of this cooperative spirit. But legendary producers like Wolf Erichson have also helped shape the sound ideal. A repertoire highlight of the anniversary edition are the programs of classical modernism, such as Schoenberg's chamber symphonies, the Stravinsky program 'Shadow Dances', as well as Copland's Appalachian Spring and Short Symphony. With original covers, historical photos and a 156-page booklet with an interview with founding member Julian Fifer, this anthology paints a comprehensive picture of Orpheus and makes many out of print treasures of his discography available again.
