The Nazis were taught that the Jews lacked the intelligence and the will to resist them. They believed that the sub humans they considered the Jews to be would simply die and leave Europe to the master race that they were creating. They were wrong! All over the occupied territories, and even in Germany itself, Jews rose in defiance, blocking the juggernaut of the SS and stemming the tide of murder and brutality. To the great surprise of many of the proponents of genocide, the Jewish resistance was fierce and costly. The armies of The Third Reich were powerful and mighty, but the resilience of the Jews was strong. People like Kovner, Anielewiscz, Wittenburg and others, led small bands of fighters against the German advance. In the forests and ghettos, from rooftops, cellars and sewers, these desperate people fought back, exacting a toll nowhere near that which had been claimed by the legions of das neuen Deutschland, but a toll nonetheless.
