Aedes Hartwellianae: Volume 1: Or, Notices of the Manor and Mansion of Hartwell - Cambridge Library Collection - British and Irish History, 19th Century

The astronomer John Lee (1783–66) inherited Hartwell House in Buckinghamshire in 1827, building there an observatory designed by his friend William Henry Smyth (1788–1865). Smyth's illustrated account of Hartwell - this first volume appeared in 1851 - illuminates both the history of the estate and the practice of contemporary astronomy.
