Dodecaphonic Fugue: a Mix-and-match Quartet

Publisher Marketing: "Dodecaphonic Fugue" is written in 12-tone, but is quite appealing to the ear. This is due to the opening melody which is repeated and developed throughout the piece. A favorite of the sax quartet at NIU, it's a challenge, but fun to play! Originally written for Sax Quartet (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass), parts are now included for many other instruments in C, Bb, Eb, and F. The best way to see if your quartet may be able to play this is to check out the ranges of the saxes, transpose the range to your instrument to saxes, and see if your instruments can play the same ranges. Any woodwinds, brass, strings, and tuned percussion are options. A fugue is a "chase." This piece has all the elements of a fugue from the 18th Century, such as the contrapuntal introduction of melodies in the 4 voices, development, and stretto, but is also written in 12-tone! It's different, quite dissonant, but you and your audience won't be sorry you chose this piece to play! Dawn LaBuy-Brockett is a composer/writer, with many offerings on Amazon. Search for "dawn labuy" to find all her works. Here is a short list of what you will find: "Conversations" is a symphony with a score available, as well as parts, a CD, and MP3 downloads.
