The Rainbow

The story of three generations of the Brangwen family, set against the decline of their traditional rural English existence in the face of Britain's ever-growing industrialisation. Lawrence openly examines attitudes to relationships, sexuality and religion in a restrictive, conforming society, looking deeply into the emotional and sexual dynamics of marriage. Surrounded by controversy, the novel was prosecuted for obscenity a few months after its initial publication. More than a thousand copies were seized and burned. The book was susequently unavailable in the UK for 11 years. However, it is now a regular on lists of greatest novels and is rightly hailed as a classic.
