Millions of people have attended these gatherings over the years, many finding their Christian faith and salvation in the shady groves, listening to energizing sermons from hastily constructed platforms, crude covered podiums, or simple structures meant to keep the rain out, but still retain the feel of the outside. Traditional hymns, such as "Shall We Gather at the River" and "In the Sweet By-and-By," joined "The Old Rugged Cross" and "I Surrender All" to create a unique evangelistic event. While camp meetings became a trademark of the Methodist and Holiness traditions, their origins go back to the early field preaching of Wesley and Whitefield.
