Self-managing Publish / Subscribe Systems: Foundations, Algorithms, and Analysis
Michael Jaeger
Event-based systems have been generating considerableinterest in academia and industry due to the growingpopularity of information-driven applications. Publish/subscribe middleware provides a platformwhich is well suited to the implementation ofevent-based systems. These unfold their strengthparticularly in dynamic scenarios, where usagepatterns and system parameters may changeunexpectedly. Most of today's publish/subscribesystems are, however, rather static and requiremanual intervention in order to adapt them tochanging conditions. The work presented in this bookis targeted at large-scale systems on the one hand, where administration is expensive and sometimesimpossible due to the high complexity. On the otherhand, it also targets smaller systems which must beable to run autonomously since manual administrationis not possible (e. g., in remote areas) or the usersare not able to take over administrative tasks (e. g., in an e-home scenario). In this book, work onreducing the efforts to manage publish/subscribesystems is presented, rendering them self-managingwith respect to fault management and performanceoptimizations thereby.
