Emerging Trends in Urban Agriculture in Ghana: Security of Tenure: Explaining Why Farmers Invest in the Absence of Secure Tenure with Evidence from Urban Agriculture in Tema District, Ghana

The enhancing effect of security of tenure to land for farming on farmers'motivation to make investment in their farming activities, has been investigated extensively in Africa. Using rural agriculture as the focus, results from such studies have largely remained inconclusive even though a positive relationship has been determined in other parts of the world. This book revisits the security of land tenure/investment debate using urban agriculture as the focus to determine the key motivation for farmers' investment under a tightly controlled land tenure regime which is typical of most African cities. Findings reported will be of interest to development researchers, especially those involved in promoting sustainable agricultural development as a strategy to reducing pervading urban poverty to ensure sustainable livelihoods.
