Biotreatment of Oily Sludge and Sediments: Biopile Technology

During processing, transportation and storage of oil, sludge and sediments are generated. Sludge is obtained from oily wastewater treatment processes, sediments can be found in water bodies where liquid oils have been disposed of. As a common feature, they both are highly concentrated by a mixture of various contaminants, and have high water content. Mishandling of oily waste has imposed a strong demand for technological solutions. This book focuses on physical and chemical processes for the treatment of oily sludge in a biopile; attempting to optimize the technology by 3D visualization. Aerobic solid-phase degradation of oily sludge appears to be technically more similar to composting of sewage sludge than remediation of oil-contaminated soil. Therefore, a new concept is needed to evaluate the role of degradation of natural organic amendment material in compost mixtures. The work helps to fill in gaps in utilizing aerobic biopile technology in remediation of sludge, sediments, soils, or biowaste.
