Long Term Prediction of Contaminant Transport in Soils: an Experimental, Semi-empirical and Analytical Modeling Approach

Industrialization and urbanization has produced various types of wastes and are dumped in low-lying areas without proper treatment and engineering controls. Bangalore district (India) has more than 60 illegal dumpsites consisting of either Municipal or industrial waste. In the present study an attempt was made for characterization of Bommasandra Industrial area dump site located towards the South of Bangalore. Large number of soil samples, were collected after characterization of site and knowing the properties of soil an attempt has been made for predicting the transport behavior of selected chemical species and by using available mathematical models to predict migration of selected chemical species with time by developing a programme using MATLAB- 7. Also a model given by USEPA DRASTIC has been used. This work is divided into eight chapters and presented in a systematic way. This book is helpful for Civil Engineers particularly Geo-technical & Geo-environmental engineers and researchers working in the field of solid waste disposal in a landfill environment.
