Adaptive Modulation in Wireless Communication: a Top Down Analysis

This book analyzes some candidate strategies for adaptive modulation-based wireless system and examines their performances in a top-down approach. It first exploits the compressibility of voice to adapt symbol duration and modulation level, to adjust the voice transmission rate as the channel quality fluctuates and enhances data throughput for integrated voice and data transmission over wireless channel. Subsequently, it presents the energy-consumption analysis in diversity-based wireless systems using adaptive modulation and increases the battery life of mobile unit using hybrid adaptive transmission scheme exploiting asymmetric capacity requirement for uplink (with higher capacity) and downlink (with lower capacity) traffic. Finally, a novel phase-shifting scheme has been discussed for digital phase modulation technique to implement adaptive modulation schemes with VLSI and also realized in VLSI.
