Supernumerary Teeth: a Comprehensive Review

Supernumerary teeth are defined as teeth that exceed the normal dental formula, regardless of their location and morphology. Such teeth are relatively common, as reflected by the many studies published in the literature. The etiology of supernumerary teeth still remains unclear. Despite advances in the knowledge of tooth morphogenesis and differentiation, relatively little is known about the etiology and molecular mechanisms underlying supernumerary tooth formation. It has been stated that development of supernumerary teeth may cause various pathologies. Whenever supernumerary teeth are diagnosed, single or multiple, a decision regarding the appropriate management should be made carefully. This book provides a detailed review on prevalence, possible etiologies, diagnosis and treatment planning of supernumerary teeth.
