Plunge Pool Scour: a Physically Based Model for Analysis of Plunge Pool Scour Hole Formation
Sokchhay Heng
Plunge pool scour due to water jet impingement from flip bucket spillways is a major concern for stabilization of the hydraulic structures. Scour hole prediction using physical model is a potential tool to foresee its characteristics during design stage. This book presents an analysis of scour hole formation in a plunge pool using a physical model. In the model study, an ideal material was selected to represent actual river bed material so that scour hole can be reproduced. Moreover, many existing empirical equations of maximum scour depth and impact location estimation were reviewed, analyzed and categorized to suit with low, medium and high flow. Based on the experimental data, a new empirical equation for maximum scour depth prediction was initiated. With its useful techniques and practical tips, hydraulic engineers and researchers conducting studies in water engineering sector especially scour hole reproduction and forecasting provoked by water jet impingement or waterfall, could find this book as a useful guide to succeed.
