From the Backside of the Sun

A wounded Civil War hero goes west in order to keep from being dishonorably discharged after a barroom fight with an officer. He chooses to remain in the Army since he has disgraced his family of not remaining in the Quaker faith. He knows the Indian way of life as is an old friend of Iowa's Mesquakie Chief and Medicine Man. His wound has been healed by the tribe's old Medicine Man and is given the gift by the Great Spirit to heal and read spirits. He is involved in many skirmishes and has befriended many Indian Chiefs of the Plains. He is seduced and falls in love with a beautiful and strong-willed woman who has seen his powers at work. He is given eternal life through the Great Spirit as part of his reward in advocating for the Native American tribes of America. He has seen the Great Spirit behind the sun and then becomes a Holy Man both in body and soul. He goes to be with his long-departed Wife and Son only when the world begins to die.
