The Liber Studiorum, a series of Turner's landscape and seascape compositions published as etching and mezzotint prints, has been described as possibly containing `` the core of all that is best in his life and work '', '' "central to Turner's career as the most personal and conceived series of prints throughout his work", or at least the "most comprehensive document of Turner's attitude towards his art in the first decade of the [nineteenth] century", and "one of the most comprehensive publication exercises ever edited by a great artist." The Latin title can be translated as "Book of Studies," although it was not published as a bound book and contains no explanatory text other than the titles of most of the compositions and letters printed above each of them to indicate the general categories of landscape discussed in detail below.
